Headache after screen time? Your Eyes Could Be Part of the Problem.

Headaches are common, but if they seem to appear after reading, working on a computer, or focusing for long periods, your eyes could be part of the problem. Learn what eye strain, vision changes, and screen time may have to do with recurring headaches.

A headache can have many causes, including stress, dehydration, lack of sleep, and migraines. But sometimes, your eyes may be contributing.

Eye strain can cause symptoms such as tired or irritated eyes, blurred vision, difficulty focusing, and headaches. These symptoms may become more noticeable after prolonged reading, computer work, or other visually demanding activities.

Can Vision Problems Cause Headaches?

Refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia can cause blurred vision and difficulty focusing. Squinting or straining to see clearly may also contribute to eye discomfort and headaches.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses but are still experiencing vision problems or headaches during visually demanding activities, your prescription may need to be reassessed.

That does not mean every headache is caused by your eyes. However, if headaches consistently occur along with vision changes or eye discomfort, an eye examination can help determine whether your vision may be contributing.

What About Headaches From Screen Time?

Spending extended periods looking at computers, tablets, and phones can contribute to digital eye strain. Symptoms can include headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and difficulty focusing.

One simple habit to try is the 20 20 20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Taking regular breaks can give your eyes a chance to relax during extended periods of screen use.

You can also reduce glare, make sure your workspace has comfortable lighting, and remember to blink regularly when concentrating on a screen.

When Should You Have Your Eyes Checked?

Consider scheduling an eye exam if you regularly experience:

• Headaches after reading or screen use

• Blurred or double vision

• Difficulty focusing

• Frequent squinting

• Eye fatigue or discomfort

• Changes in vision despite wearing your usual glasses or contacts

A comprehensive eye exam evaluates more than whether you need a stronger prescription. It also gives your optometrist an opportunity to evaluate the health of your eyes.

Keep in mind that headaches are not always related to your eyes. If you experience a sudden, severe headache, sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, or other concerning symptoms, seek medical care promptly rather than assuming the problem is eyestrain.

Give Your Eyes a Checkup

If headaches or eye discomfort seem to follow you through your workday, school day, or time spent on screens, your vision may be worth checking.

Optometric Associates of Southern Maine provides comprehensive eye exams for patients in Biddeford, Sanford, Scarborough, and surrounding Southern Maine communities. An eye examination can help determine whether a vision problem or another eye health concern could be contributing to your symptoms.

Sometimes the first clue that your eyes need attention is not what you see, but how they feel.
