Are Glasses and Contact Lenses Prescriptions the Same?

The prescription for glasses is not the same prescription for contact lenses. To get a prescription for contact lenses you will need a comprehensive contact lens exam, which has a separate cost.

What Types of Eyeglasses and Prescription Sunglasses Are Available?

Optometric Associates of Southern Maine offers the latest lens materials, including ultra-strong polycarbonate lenses and ultrathin high-index plastic lenses. You can also choose between high-quality acetate and metal frames. Regardless of your chosen glasses lens material, you can also add protective coatings to the lens to block glare, repel scratches, block ultraviolet (UV) rays, or filter out blue light from digital devices.

Prescription sun protection is another wonderful tool to help protect both your eyes and the surrounding skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. In addition to prescription sunglasses as a stand-alone pair, transition lenses are available. They darken outdoors with ultraviolet light exposure and transition back to clear indoors, it is like having two pairs of glasses in one!

Can I Use Drugstore Glasses Instead of Prescription Glasses?

Many men and women with vision problems wonder whether the glasses available at the local drugstore could work instead of buying prescription glasses. In most cases, the answer is no. Drugstore glasses are meant only for near vision focus like reading. Plus, drugstore glasses are only useful for minor vision issues.

Drugstore glasses are not designed for your unique vision correction requirements. For example, they do not correct astigmatism or asymmetrical prescriptions. …But, in many cases you will be best off with custom-made prescription lenses tailored to your exact visual needs. A comprehensive eye exam at Optometric Associates of Southern Maine can get you one step closer to maximized vision with the help of the latest designs and most advanced prescription lenses available.
